Battle of the Bards - Les Abóminables - Stage Fighting Audition

The band head over to the Arcane Opera building, and see a retrofitted Watchtower.

The walls of the fortress used to form a figure-eight, but the north side has been torn down.

The remaining walls frame two courtyards and a citadel.

A hallway runs through the inside of the walls, with turrets connecting the first and second floors.

All of the old castle walls are made of thick stonework; all of the buildings added by the theater are made of wood. Natural light and occasional candles illuminate the halls and rooms of the opera.

The band head to the Theater Front.

A small stone fortress stands at the corner of two busy thoroughfares. Banners decorate the battlements, and a colorful signboard stands before the closed front doors. The poster shows a vulnerable-looking yeti in a snowstorm and bears the legend, “Les Abóminables, opening soon!”

The opera stands on a busy street, and there are townsfolk passing by at all hours of the day. The front door is locked and bolted, so the band decide to scout around to the back.

As the band head around the back, down an alley lined with posters and grafiti they spot the Crew Entrance a wooden door that reads “Cast and Crew.” The band hear muffled song, laughter and shouting through the wall.

An Elvish woman who introduces herself as Lorelei answers the door, She opens the door a crack, and after greeting the party, meaningfully shouts, “The extras are here!” into the room behind her.

Lorelei takes her sweet time reviewing the partyʼs papers. A few of the band members sneak a peak behind her and see a chorus line in robes, but with feathers sticking out as if they were trying to be hid.

Once the scuffling subsides, Lorelei eventually welcomes the party inside.

Like opening an attic dress-up trunk, the band enter a plain warehouse bursting with gaudy colour inside. Overstuffed costume racks and brightly-lit makeup stations fight for floorspace. Three strangely-dressed crew watch the band curiously from across the room.

After letting the party inside, Lorelei returns to sewing sequins onto a yeti headpiece. She directs the party to the set locker and tells them to speak to Sadie about their auditions.

Three members of the chorus line are gossiping near the southern hallway. They are covered head to toe with robes and scarves from the costume racks, but their stances are awkward on their bird legs.

The band now can see feathers poking out of their disguises.

When Xlixi tries to make conversation with them, they respond with inside jokes and laughter.

After a wracking his brains for a while he realises the chorus line were harpies!

A hallway plastered with call-sheets connects the different wings of the theater. On the west wall, the hall opens into a busy courtyard. To the south are the stage doors. To the east, a bank of lockers separates two doors, one heavily bolted and one slightly ajar. Across from the lockers, a stairway heads up.

The band go to the Set Locker to meet Sadie

As they enter the Set Locker they smell meat, and see very little.

A hunched figure tends a simmering cauldron over a low fire in the center of the room. Strange, organic shapes shift in the shadows.
The set locker is the domain of Sadie Griddlebones.

With many cackles and unsettling pet names, Sadie greets the characters and gives the Arcane Opera orientation.
Weapons No real weapons are allowed in the theater. Sadie insists that they leave all visible weapons with her - she gives them a claim slip for each one.

-yer this did not go down well, and Xlixi managed to hide a dagger from Sadie-

The band spot in the Set Locker a Snow-Laden pine tree hovering near the fire, and the prow of a viking ship growling at a tea table.

What kind of weird and wonderful stuff is going on!

Sadie tells them of the Auditions The opera wants generalists. The more roles that each person can fill, the more they will get paid. The available roles are:
  • Stage-fighting with Kiana, the choreographer
  • Crew with Biscuit, the assistant stage manager
  • Singing with Oread, the lead soprano
Before heading the the stage the band pop their heads into the Directors Office.

They see a messy office used more for storage than work. The bookshelves are stuffed with unbound manuscripts and books of illustrations, and the desk is one large “to do” paper pile.

They do not search the office out of fear of being discovered, so head over to the stage.

The southern courtyard has been converted into a Globe-style open theater, with the belly of the stage inside the citadel. The northern courtyard is now a backstage compound.

A short fight of stairs leads up to the raised wooden floor of the citadel. The stage extends through arches in the citadel wall and into the southern courtyard. It is noisy and chaotic; crew wrestle with the fly system and clumps of actors run script rehearsals.

At the rear of the stage, Kiana is hanging off of a ladder, holding a fly rope for the crew. On hearing the party asking about extras, she jumps down from the ladder and introduce herself.

Downstage, the director is working on blocking with several actors.

She is loud, extroverted, and quickly draws the attention of the staff in her stage-fighting audition.

Kiana invites the whole party to a mock battle with prop weapons.

Xlixi fails spectacularly, with a miss stepped pounce over on of the "fallen" crew, and accidently jumps on his chest causing him real damage.

Bardo also fails, but that was more not wanting to rumble his feathers.

Hieronymo and Hydrica both pass the stage fighting audition.

The Band introduce themselves to the Director, and they get into a conversation around the hunted greenroom, and offer to rid the greenroom of the ghost, for which the Director said he would double their pay if they could get rid of the ghost and confesses that she would “owe them a huge favour” if they exorcised the ghost. She adds that Cleave, a formidable fighter, might be convinced to help them.
